What Is Urine – And What Is In It?

Urine is liquid waste produced by the kidneys to remove excess fluids and toxins from the blood.

Function: The primary function of urine is to remove waste and excess fluid from the body.

Composition: Urine is 95% water, with the remaining 5% consisting of waste products like urea, creatinine, and electrolytes (e.g. sodium, potassium), uric acid, other salts, along with other substances from your body.

Pathway (urinary tract): Urine travels from the kidneys down the ureters to the bladder, where it is stored. When the bladder is full, it is expelled from the body through the urethra.

The kidneys filter the blood, and the waste products form urine, which travels through the ureters to the bladder for storage before being expelled from the body through the urethra.

The kidneys produce around 1-2 litres of urine per day, with a normal range of 0.5-2.5 L/day.

  • Proteinuria: Normally, urine contains a very small amount of protein (albumin-creatinine-ratio (ACR) <3 mg/mmol); excessive proteinuria can indicate kidney damage (especially of the glomeruli)..

  • Ketones: Ketone bodies (e.g. acetone, acetoacetate) are usually absent in the urine; they can appear in urine during fasting, starvation, or diabetic ketoacidosis.
  • Urine Osmolality: Normal range is 50-1200 mOsm/kg, reflecting the kidneys’ ability to concentrate or dilute urine.
  • Microscopic Analysis: Normal urine may contain <25 RBCs and <5 WBCs (and occasional epithelial cells or hyaline casts) per high-power field.
