Can You Drink Alcohol With CKD?

Drinking alcohol can be done safely in moderation, even if you have chronic kidney disease (CKD), end stage renal failure (ESRF) – or diabetes.

The recommendations for alcohol for people with chronic kidney disease are the same as for the general population: it is best not to drink more than 14 units a week (for both men and women).

Because alcoholic drinks come in different strengths and sizes, units are a good way of telling how strong your drink is.

Take caution, however, if you have high blood pressure (hypertension). Long-term excess alcohol consumption can be a factor in high blood pressure, and make it harder to control.

Long-term excessive alcohol consumption can damage other organs, especially the liver, brain and heart.
