The Rhythm of Diagnosis

Can an algorithm understand your mood better than a GP? In 2026, the answer is becoming surprisingly clear.

New research (Otani et al.,2026,PLOS Mental Health) shows that AI can now identify depression with over 91% accuracy. It does this simply by analysing 30 seconds of  WhatsApp voice notes.

Think of it like a guitarist tuning an instrument. A musician knows that if a string is even slightly “flat,” the whole song changes. AI works the same way. It tracks vocal biomarkers tiny shifts in pitch, rhythm that the human ear cannot hear.

The GP: Sees you for a ten-minute appointment.

The Smartphone: “Hears” the daily rhythm of your life.

Better treatment, Not just Diagnosis : Accuracy is great, but care is what matters. The University of Oxford’s PETRUSHKA trial (2026) proved that AI makes treatment much more effective.

In the study, patient using an AI tool were 40% less likely to stop their medication. Why? Because the technology helped the GP “tune” the treatment to the patient’s specific needs.

The Verdict: AI is a powerful “smoke alarm,” but isn’t a cure. We still need human doctors for empathy and care that an algorithm simply cannot reach.
