How to Keep a Well Stocked Medicine Cabinet at Home

We will now provide a list of over-the-counter (OTC) tablets to keep at home.

• Aspirin (or ibuprofen) – coughs, colds, sore throat etc
• Bacitracin ointment – antibiotic cream)
• Bonjela – mouth ulcers
• Calamine lotion – cooling; useful after bites and stings
• 0.5% Chloramphenicol eye drops (antibiotic) – for conjunctivitis (or ‘red/pink’ eye)
• Cetirizine (or chlorpheniramine, fexofenadine) – itching, hay fever, bites and stings
• Clotrimazole (or ketoconazole, miconazole, terbinafine) – fungal infections
• Eye drops (lubricating) – sore eyes, contact lens irritation
• Gaviscon (combination antacid; or sodium bicarbonate, magnesium trisilicate, aluminium, magnesium hydroxide) – heartburn/peptic ulcer
• Haemorrhoid (piles) ointment
• 1% Hydrocortisone cream – eczema, some rashes
• Loperamide – diarrhoea
• Omeprazole (or cimetidine) – heartburn/ulcer
• Paracetamol – pain
• Savlon (or germolene) – antiseptic creams
• Salicylic acid – verruca and wart treatment
• Senna (or lactulose) – constipation
• Sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) – you may not consider this a medicine. But preventing sunburn is important. So always have some in the house.
