In a recent FDA-funded study, concerns were raised about the safety of receiving both the COVID and high-dose flu vaccines during the same visit, especially for older adults. The study suggested a potential 20-35% increased risk of stroke in this group. However, there is no need to panic or cancel your appointment. Experts emphasise that these findings are preliminary, not yet peer-reviewed, and further research is needed before reaching definitive conclusions.
The possible increased stroke risk must be weighed against the known benefits of these vaccines for elderly individuals. Also, COVID and flu infections themselves have been linked to an increased risk of stroke and other severe outcomes.
The NHS maintains their confidence in the safety of COVID-19 vaccines. It is still encouraged that individuals, particularly older adults, to get both vaccines if they are offered them, even at the same time.
Both flu and COVID vaccines are given free on the NHS to adults who:
- are 65 and over
- have certain health conditions
- are pregnant
- are in long-stay residential care
- are a carer
- live with someone who is more likely to get a severe infection due to a weakened immune system
