What is a health visitor?

Health visitors are qualified nurses or midwives who have undergone extra training. They work with families with children under five years old, to support and advise on child health and development.

health visitor will be notified when you book in with a midwife, and again when your baby is born. They will contact you initially at around 25 weeks, and again 10-14 days after the birth. You can arrange any further appointments at that stage.

They take over responsibility for your baby from your midwife 14 days after birth.

Health visitors work with midwives, nurses, GPs and other health professionals and services in the community. They can provide support at home or help you to contact and access local services.

Each area in the UK has its own health visiting service. You can find your local service by searching ‘health visiting’ + your local area on Google.
