Do women have a hospital consultant when pregnant?

Yes and no. [“thanks, thought you might say that” MyHSN Ed]. And it depends on which bit of the country you live in. In country areas it is less common.

But. For most pregnant women, you are not given a named hospital consultant (these are the most senior doctors). Your midwife will be responsible for you during the pregnancy. You do not need one as pregnancy is a natural process that usually goes well.

If you have a pregnancy that is considered higher risk (to you or the baby or both), you will be given a named consultant, and are likely to meet them and their team, and have regular hospital appointments. This could be because you have diabetes, heart disease or kidney problems.
