Being a student comes with a higher risk of getting ill due to the vast quantities of new people you come into contact with.
However, along with physical illness, the transition to being away from home and looking after yourself and the increased workload is resulting in increasing mental health issues in the student population.
One of the most important skills as a student with new-found independence is to know when and where to get help.
If you’re moving a fair distance away from home, then it is advisable to register with a local GP so you can quickly receive emergency care should you need it.
Some universities may offer an on campus GP specifically for students, but it will still be your job to register with them.
Health centres connected to the university will often have more experience dealing with the common issues experienced by student populations – they will also be able to connect you to other support such as psychiatrists and counsellors.
It is important to register sooner rather than later the first few weeks after moving will be the time in which you are most likely to contract an illness due to the vast quantity of new people you will be around.
Depending on the distance that you have moved away from home, you may choose to stay registered to your previous GP if you are able to travel back in the event that you need to seek medical care.
