What medicines are safe in pregnancy?

Some medicines you take regularly can affect your unborn baby.

If you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy you should make an appointment with your GP or midwife. This can be face-to-face or virtual.

You can then discuss your regular prescription medicines – as well as any medicine that you buy over the counter – and their possible effects on your pregnancy.

Examples include blood pressure tablets called ‘ACEs’ (the names of these medicines end in ‘…pril’), and ‘ARBs’ (which end in ‘…sartan’) which should not be taken.

Do not stop taking any medicines without speaking to your GP first.
